Three British teenagers held in Turkey on way to Syria to join Islamic State

Three British Muslim teenagers suspected of trying to travel to Syria to join the dreaded Islamic State terror group have been detained and sent back by authorities in Turkey, the Scotland Yard said here today. The three males—two boys aged 17 from north-west London and a man aged 19 -- were detained in Istanbul, and were feared to be on their way to join IS extremists. The teenagers have been flown back to the UK from Turkey and arrested, the Metropolitan Police said. They were reported missing on Friday and were detained after UK counter-terrorism officers alerted Turkish officials, the Met said. Their families have been “kept informed of developments”, they said. Scotland Yard said counter-terrorism officers had initially been made aware that the two 17-year-old boys had gone missing and were believed to be traveling to Syria. Enquiries found they had traveled with a third man. “Officers alerted the Turkish authorities who were able to intercept all three males, preventing travel to Syria. They remain in detention in Turkey,” a Met spokesperson added. The latest arrests come after Shamima Begum, Amira Abase, both 15, and Kadiza Sultana, 16 -- schoolgirls from London— took flights to Istanbul last month, from where it is feared they traveled to Syria. Their disappearance led to criticisms from Turkey’s deputy prime minister, who said officials in the country had not been given enough warning about their disappearance. A large number of Britons have traveled to Turkey, using the country as a crossing point to eventually enter Syria to join IS militants, who control large swaths of territory in Syria and Iraq. According to British police, nearly 700 Britons have traveled to Syria to join the extremists, triggering concerns that some may launch attacks in the UK when they return.

BSNL set to slash 3G data rates by 50 per cent

Barcelona :Against the trend of rising mobile internet tariff, state-run telecom company BSNL is likely to cut its 3G data rates by at least 50 per cent once the next phase of its network expansion is completed. “We estimate that 3G data rates can be reduced by at least 50 per cent compared to prevailing rates under phase 8 of our network expansion,” BSNL Chairman and Managing Director Anupam Shrivastav told PTI in an interview here. The company at present offers 3G mobile internet at par with 2G rates of leading of telecom companies. It sells 1 GB of 3G mobile internet service for Rs 175 and 2GB for Rs 251. “We have utilised over 90 per cent of 3G capacity. If we reduce tariff right now, there can be sudden increase in traffic and network may not be able to bear the load. Once we expand this capacity to handle adequate traffic under phase 8, we will reduce rates,” Shrivastav said. The company is at present working on phase 7 network expansion plan which has an outlay of about Rs 4,800 crore and is expected to be complete it by June this year. The public sector firm has started working on phase 8 network expansion plan and expects to start issuing tender for this phase in the first quarter of financial year 2015-16. The company was allocated 3G spectrum in 2009 but it has not been able to invest between 2009-13 in building network due to various procedural issues and mainly due to cash crunch that it faced after paying for two sets of airwaves- 3G and broadband wireless access spectrum in 2010. Shrivastav said that to increase mobile internet traffic capacity BSNL is tuning its network for next generation internet ids known as IPv6 and adding more 3G capacity in its regional node centers. Under phase 8, BSNL has plans to integrate wifi hotspots that it is rolling out in 2,500 cities and towns with 3G by end of next year to increase network capacity.
